Steelers Struck Draft Gold Twice With Two Perfect Offensive Selections
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers have received rave reviews for their 2024 NFL Draft selections, even though it is too early to tell exactly how well these players will perform over the course of their careers. Pittsburgh went heavy on offense in this draft, including during their first three picks: offensive tackle Troy Fautanu, center Zach Frazier, and wide receiver Roman Wilson.

Now that the rookies attended minicamp over Mother's Day weekend, reports about how they looked in Black and Gold and ran in a professional offense are starting to emerge. Frazier is receiving great praise, being lauded as a perfect fit for the Steelers by The Athletic's Nick Baumgardner and Scott Dochterman

"This is one of those player-team matches you make in mock drafts that seems so perfect, it can't possibly work. But it did for Pittsburgh -- twice, really, with Frazier and first-rounder Troy Fautanu. At nearby West Virginia, Frazier (6-2 1/2, 313) started 46 games, including 38 at center. He was a four-time high school wrestling champion and a Second Team All-American center last fall. In other words, the perfect Steelers center."

Baumgardner and Dochterman aren't the first analysts to believe that Frazier and the Steelers were a match made in heaven. He was a mock draft dream, but the question was when. Many experts did not believe he would last until 51 when the Steelers were able to nab him. Fortunately, the early and long run on other offensive players, especially quarterbacks, made the centers fall somewhat.

Frazier certainly has big cleats to fill. While center has been a weakness for Pittsburgh over the last few seasons, historically, it has been a position of strength and anchors a tough offensive line. If he is successful, Frazier will join the likes of the legendary Mike Webster, Dermontti Dawson, and Maurkice Pouncey in history. Frazier said he is ready for that challenge.

Consider a pro-ready player coming out of West Virginia. He was one of the few true centers in the draft. During the rookie minicamp, Frazier told the media he was thrilled to be a part of such a historic franchise and acknowledged the extra pressure of living up to the legacy of the players who came before him. He said he is ready to put his head down and work hard.

Steelers' Troy Fautanu Getting Over Newbie Nerves

After the rookie minicamp, Fautanu told the media he was so nervous to get out there and play. He initially had such a bad case of the jitters that he jumped off sides on the first play. He said it felt great to play football again.

The pre-draft process can be long and tedious with the players repeating the same drills over and over under the watchful eyes of coaches and scouts. Now that Fautanu is all but certain he has made the team, he can relax and enjoy the accelerated process of becoming an NFL lineman.

Fautanu will join Broderick Jones, the first-round pick in 2023, as a tackle on the offensive line. It is unclear if they will start Fautanu immediately or give him some time to learn behind the returning players as they did with Jones last season.
