Cody Rhodes Learned Of Plans For The Rock vs. Roman Reigns The Day Of The 2024 Royal Rumble
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Cody Rhodes had a feeling everything would work out.

Rhodes won the 2024 Royal Rumble and was slated to challenge Roman Reigns at WrestleMania—but that wasn’t the original plan.

WWE (and The Rock) pivoted after Rhodes gained more support when it looked like he wouldn’t get his title match. The Rock versus Roman Reigns was planned for the event, and now he shares that he was informed of that plan the day of his second Royal Rumble win in Tampa.

Rhodes appeared on Busted Open Radio on Monday and previewed the upcoming WrestleMania 40 documentary. Rhodes revealed that he learned about Rock vs. Roman that day, and explained his mindset in the following weeks.

“We talked a little bit about that in the behind-the-scenes documentary. The one thing that is revealed in that documentary and might put things in a different perspective for people is I found out the possibility of The Rock versus Roman Reigns the day of the Royal Rumble,” Rhodes revealed. “I had to leave that room, head up, and make sure no one knew what could possibly happened. One of the more difficult days I’ve had in the wrestling business. But also, how could you complain when you’re winning the Royal Rumble, when you’re pointing at the sign?”

“I just had this feeling…”

Rhodes noted several of the issues faced on his road to WrestleMania. However, he knew everything would somehow work out for him in the end.

“[There were] over 20,000 people in Tampa. It was such a high, such a low. But I will say this — the month leading up to WrestleMania 40, I just couldn’t catch a break, when it came to the ideal circumstances. I was just talking to Brandi about this this morning, but my bus, a few days before WrestleMania, becomes a giant fireball in the parking lot,” Rhodes explained.

“They had to bring in a new bus for me. I’m sleeping in a bunk for a band I don’t even know,” he added. “I was not going to be presented with the ideal circumstances. And I had given into that I had conceded to that before WrestleMania because I just had this feeling. Even going back to the Royal Rumble, I had this feeling that it was going to work out.”

The WrestleMania 40 documentary is still waiting to be released. Former WWE writer and Seven Bucks Productions Senior Vice President of Development Brian Gewirtz recently shared why the documentary was delayed (and put one rumor about the delay to rest).
