Wrestling veteran reveals that Tony Khan issued an edict to ban AEW stars from watching Royal Rumble 2023
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

In an interesting tidbit, a wrestling veteran has claimed that AEW president Tony Khan dished out an edict to prevent his roster from watching the Royal Rumble in 2023. At the event, Cody Rhodes made his return from a torn pec and eventually won the men’s Royal Rumble match. However, no one at AEW, most of whom included Rhodes’ friends, was allowed to watch the show, claimed Konnan.

The latter disclosed the matter in a tell-all episode on the Keeping It 100 podcast. But why did Tony allegedly subdue his talent? According to Konnan, it likely stemmed from an incident that had a domino effect on the entire situation. About a month prior to the Royal Rumble, former AEW star Dragon Lee announced that he’s headed to WWE. Lee made the promulgation immediately after ousting the FTR for the AAA World Tag Team Championships at AAA Lucha Libre: Noche de Campeones.

That night, Dragon won the gold alongside his brother, Dralistico. The decision was seemingly made by Konnan, a lead figure at Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide. The next day, Lee signed with WWE. Seeing the drama unfold in real time, Tony Khan was incensed at the decision. He called Konnan to meet in-person, and the AEW CEO went off on the American-Cuban wrestling personality.

"But bro, he had given out that day the order that if he found out anybody was watching Cody at the Royal Rumble when he returned and won, he [Tony Khan] basically gave an edict: ‘I better not find anybody watching that show,'" Konnan on Tony Khan via Keeping It 100 podcast

Khan asked why Konnan made that move, having the belief that the latter facilitated Dragon Lee’s WWE signing while sabotaging FTR’s title reign for that cause. Tony even said that the Cuban figure stabbed him in the back by not keeping him posted on the situation. The 60-year-old further revealed that on that day, the Jaguars executive instructed his employees not to watch the Royal Rumble at all.

Ricky Starks attended WWE Royal Rumble in 2023 to watch Cody Rhodes

On one hand, when Tony Khan allegedly told his co-workers that he better not find anyone tuning into the WWE PLE, one of his top stars went to attend the show. That was none other than Ricky Starks. The Stroke Daddy recently addressed tribalism in wrestling and how he’s totally against it.

He made the visit to the Alamodome in San Antonio to witness his close friend Cody Rhodes reach the zenith. Not only did Starks visit the Royal Rumble last year, he was also in the stadium for WrestleMania XL.

At the event, The American Nightmare fulfilled his destiny by finishing the story with Roman Reigns. Another one of Ricky’s buddies, Jade Cargill, was in action at The Showcase of the Immortals in Philadelphia as well.
